What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition where the body is unable to use the sugar (glucose) from the food we eat to give us energy.  The reason for the body not being able to use the sugar from the food we eat is either because the body is not producing enough insulin or the body’s cells are resistant to the insulin that is produced or both. Either way, the amount of sugar (glucose) circulating in the blood continues to build up, resulting in hyperglycaemia (high blood glucose).

There are 3 main types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes and
  • Gestational Diabetes.
